'Nobody gets left behind.' (HELP!)
« on: June 16, 2017, 11:56:25 AM »
Waves crashed onto the onyx sand creating a tangle of milky foam that clung to the beach, trying desperately to fight the current dragging it back out to sea. Just as one frothing undulation was absorbed into the dark ocean, another was tumbling inward, eagerly eating away at the sandy shoreline. The roar of the water meeting the land was loud and urgent, it seemed to drown out any other signs of life, even the seabirds were bearly audible over the reverberation. Though despite the cacophony of the busy tide making landfall there was another sound, one that seemed to pierce through the deafening blanket of rushing water, calling out for help.

A young Orca calf lay in the surging water, a desperate series of whistles and clicks emanating from her unformed melon. She thrashed and kicked out her tail, trying to arch herself enough to back out into the churning water behind her. The tide was going out and she had made a grave error by venturing so close to the water's edge. She was young, inexperienced and alone, exploring had caused her to lose her family pod many hours before. She couldn't recall the events that lead to her current situation exactly, the young Sea Wolf had been chasing after a particularly odd creature that had many legs and shot through the water like a rocket. As she had gotten close to it, her mouth agape, an explosion of black ink enveloped her, clouding her vision and startling her. The young mammal squealed and sharply angled her direction to escape the inky black chaos, next thing she knew she was scraping onto the beach, her body breaking the surface of the water. The momentum had forced her almost completely out of the water, only her tail fluke was left submerged. Panic set in as she twisted and contorted her body in the sand, only serving to create a divot into which she sunk, anchoring her further.

Clicks and whistles continued to call out to anyone, everyone, to help the poor panicked baby. Her blue eyes swiveled and blinked, her slick black skin still glistened with seawater as she slapped her tail in vain. In the afternoon sun, it wouldn't be long before her water dependent skin would begin to dry out and crack. The weight of her own body, if not somehow lightened, would eventually begin to crush her lungs, suffocating her. The young orca was desperate, she didn't quite know the exact danger she was in but she knew that she didn't like being out of the comforting embrace of the ocean waters.

Iri leaned back on her hind legs, letting a groan escape her as muscles stretched in her back. She wasn't sleeping well; the sound of the waves crashing against the beach called to her in a way she had never experienced before. She seemed to spend all her free time on the beach now, though never daring to venture deeper than mid-leg. She was near desperate to see a sea wolf; she had a general picture in her head and the vague memory of a dream in which her body was foreign and misshapen, slicing through water as a claw would a blade of grass. It wasn't the same, though. She wanted to see the huge creatures, hear their melodious voices. She was a Whisper now, was it not her job to know of all things that effect the pack? Surely she should know of the creatures that made their home so close to the eastern border?

With no work this morning, she made her way for the beach. Maybe she would run into Anky, she missed spending time with her dear friend. It was along this thought line she traveled as she walked, the rest of the world drowned out by the crashing of waves and her own mind. But... What was that? Another sound, a high pitched sound, almost like a bird. It was so strange, otherworldly. There was no real way to describe the sound, but it came from the direction of the beach. Her steps picked up until she was running for the rocky steps that led down to black sand.

She saw the disturbance as soon as she reached the top of the stairs. A large creature was sprawled on the sand and, in a flash, everything Anky said about the sea wolves came together. She'd expected something much larger; this creature was little more than twice her own length, although the bulk was much larger than herself. It flailed, releasing the sounds that had caught her attention, but could not seem to move. Her breath caught. The creature obviously needed help. She looked over her shoulder, but there was no one close enough to call to for help. Instead, she released a howl that she hoped would draw attention and then took the steps two at a time, hitting the beach running.

Without a care for her own safety, she ran straight up to the creature, her eyes wide with concern. Though she had doubts the creature would understand her, she quickly began speaking to it in the most calming voice she could manage while dunking herself completely in the water that crashed around the sea wolf. "Shhh, relax little one, you are in good paws." Carefully, slowly, she reached a paw toward the creature, as one would a dangerous injured animal. If it let her touch it, she would move closer, allowing her soaking fur to push against the rubbery skin that was drying by the moment. "I am here to help you," she murmured softly, adding some nonsensical but comforting sounds; she hummed softly a tune with no direction, simply to keep the creature's attention.

She glanced toward the steps. Someone please hurry!

The young wolf was trotting through a nearby flower field, nosing a flower occasionally as he hummed a random song. At six months, he was well on his way to reaching his adult height. The perks of reaching full height quickly as a wolf. Despite his growth though, Skylar was as perky as ever, grinning happily and enjoying the world overall. A butterfly landed on his shoulder, and he took it with him on his little walk, showing the resting critter all the things Gemini had. A tour guide for the butterfly! That's what he was! "And THAT is our wall!" he was just telling the monarch, gesturing with his maw at the tall thing.

Now what? "Perhaps the beach?" he asked his little friend, though the butterfly had no response. Walking towards the sounds of the waves crashing against the shore, the six-month-old pup eagerly thought of the ocean. He loved to swim, loved it ever since Anky had taught him to traverse the water! The waves were fun to hop in, and the water was cool to the touch. He never minded the sand either, it was very pretty in his opinion. Skylar could already picture the ocean, but knew it would come within his view pretty soon.

A howl pierced the air, and his ears perked to listen. Hm? Someone was calling from the beach? Skylar trotted a little faster now, glancing down to see if the butterfly was there. Nope, it had flown away it seems. The star child frowned, but there was nothing to be done for it. He broke into a run instead, eager to reach the beach faster as well as see what was going on. The closer he got, the more he began to hear the clicks and whistles in the air. Was that what he thought it was...?

"Sea-wolfy??" he called out just as he reached the head of the stairs that led down to the beach. Skylar peered down and caught sight of just what he had mentioned. "SEA WOLF!" he cried in alarm as he began to hop down the steps and reach the sand. "Iri!" The young male called to his friend Iri, since he now spotted her near the small sea wolf. He ran over to her, tongue lolling as he caught his breath, but he smiled up at the older female regardless. "Hi! What's goin' on?" he asked, looking at the sea wolf then looking back at Iridescent.

"Sea wolf need our help?" He didn't know what was wrong, but he could sense the urgency of the situation. "I will help! What do I do?" Skylar was ready to do whatever it took to help his fellow sea-wolfy!

Anky had spent a good part of the morning swimming back and forth to his hidden lair in the high tide cave, doing his best to make the space homey. As he finally emerged from the cave entrance the beast took in a deep lungful of fresh sea air, enjoying the white noise created by the waves and the solitude of this stretch of beach. Anky enjoyed his new home, his new packmates but there were times, like now, that he preferred the isolation, private time to soak up his surroundings and reflect on the ocean's beauty. Taking in another deep breath, letting it out slowly, blue eyes scanning the surface of the rough ocean that stretched out before him, hoping to spot a lone black dorsal fin but there was no sign of the matriarch today. Considering for a moment, the water seemed angry today it would probably be easier to cross the beach rather than swim the shoreline today. Turning slowly away from the cliffs, Anky headed down the coast, black paws licked by the intermittent rush of saltwater that licked at the sandy shore.

Trotting slowly, head held high, he thought he heard a familiar sound up ahead but that puzzled him. The sound was a long, high whistle, almost identical to the calls he'd heard from the large female sea wolf that visited him frequently. However, it was most certainly coming from the beach, not the ocean, and Anky knew for a fact, sea wolves COULD NOT live on the land. Only once before had he come across a stranded Orca and the bloody scene came rippling back to him, it had been a young male, he'd been snagged on a shallow bit of rock and the tide had gone out rapidly. The poor animal had screamed and thrashed, causing the sharp rocks to slice into his thick skin, eventually, despite Anky's attempts to help the young animal stopped moving. By the time the tide had come in, the orca had died, his mother and other family members raged and called from nearby, obviously racked with grief. Panic set in as the hellhound's heart rate picked up, beating rapidly as he surged forward, sprinting in the direction of the cry.

As Anky neared the source of the chaos he could see the small sea wolf calf lying in the sand, only it's tail rested in the retreating surf. Two other forms registered as he approached, Iri and Skylar, a rush of relief hit him, he wasn't alone. It had been something he was dreading, trying to save a stranded whale without help, though he wasn't sure two adults and an adolescent could do much, it was better than nothing. Anky gave out a shout as he approached, Skylar! Iri! He greeted them, his voice tainted with fear and a hint of panic, he offered a small smile in hopes of reassuring them both. Bumping young Skylar softly with his hip in greeting, his eyes meeting the almost grown whelp's, Skylar was a good pup and it gave Anky an odd sense of pride to see him growing larger. He then turned to gently nudge Iri's cheek with his head affectionately, she had been his first friend in Gemini and she held a special place in his heart. Anky sighed, looking from Skylar to Iri, Well, you wanted to meet a Sea Wolf... he tried to lighten the atmosphere with a bit of humor but it came out drier than he'd anticipated. He turned to the young Orca, he leaned down to look her in the eye and offered her a soft shushing sound and whispered We've got you. He lifted his head and looked toward the ocean and there, just like last time, were the gathering of black dorsal fins cutting through the rough water. The calf's family, desperate to help but unable to do anything, the water too shallow for them to get any closer, instead the small gathering seemed to pace, back and forth just past the break.
