'Nobody gets left behind.' (HELP!)
« on: June 16, 2017, 11:56:25 AM »
Waves crashed onto the onyx sand creating a tangle of milky foam that clung to the beach, trying desperately to fight the current dragging it back out to sea. Just as one frothing undulation was absorbed into the dark ocean, another was tumbling inward, eagerly eating away at the sandy shoreline. The roar of the water meeting the land was loud and urgent, it seemed to drown out any other signs of life, even the seabirds were bearly audible over the reverberation. Though despite the cacophony of the busy tide making landfall there was another sound, one that seemed to pierce through the deafening blanket of rushing water, calling out for help.

A young Orca calf lay in the surging water, a desperate series of whistles and clicks emanating from her unformed melon. She thrashed and kicked out her tail, trying to arch herself enough to back out into the churning water behind her. The tide was going out and she had made a grave error by venturing so close to the water's edge. She was young, inexperienced and alone, exploring had caused her to lose her family pod many hours before. She couldn't recall the events that lead to her current situation exactly, the young Sea Wolf had been chasing after a particularly odd creature that had many legs and shot through the water like a rocket. As she had gotten close to it, her mouth agape, an explosion of black ink enveloped her, clouding her vision and startling her. The young mammal squealed and sharply angled her direction to escape the inky black chaos, next thing she knew she was scraping onto the beach, her body breaking the surface of the water. The momentum had forced her almost completely out of the water, only her tail fluke was left submerged. Panic set in as she twisted and contorted her body in the sand, only serving to create a divot into which she sunk, anchoring her further.

Clicks and whistles continued to call out to anyone, everyone, to help the poor panicked baby. Her blue eyes swiveled and blinked, her slick black skin still glistened with seawater as she slapped her tail in vain. In the afternoon sun, it wouldn't be long before her water dependent skin would begin to dry out and crack. The weight of her own body, if not somehow lightened, would eventually begin to crush her lungs, suffocating her. The young orca was desperate, she didn't quite know the exact danger she was in but she knew that she didn't like being out of the comforting embrace of the ocean waters.

Iri leaned back on her hind legs, letting a groan escape her as muscles stretched in her back. She wasn't sleeping well; the sound of the waves crashing against the beach called to her in a way she had never experienced before. She seemed to spend all her free time on the beach now, though never daring to venture deeper than mid-leg. She was near desperate to see a sea wolf; she had a general picture in her head and the vague memory of a dream in which her body was foreign and misshapen, slicing through water as a claw would a blade of grass. It wasn't the same, though. She wanted to see the huge creatures, hear their melodious voices. She was a Whisper now, was it not her job to know of all things that effect the pack? Surely she should know of the creatures that made their home so close to the eastern border?

With no work this morning, she made her way for the beach. Maybe she would run into Anky, she missed spending time with her dear friend. It was along this thought line she traveled as she walked, the rest of the world drowned out by the crashing of waves and her own mind. But... What was that? Another sound, a high pitched sound, almost like a bird. It was so strange, otherworldly. There was no real way to describe the sound, but it came from the direction of the beach. Her steps picked up until she was running for the rocky steps that led down to black sand.

She saw the disturbance as soon as she reached the top of the stairs. A large creature was sprawled on the sand and, in a flash, everything Anky said about the sea wolves came together. She'd expected something much larger; this creature was little more than twice her own length, although the bulk was much larger than herself. It flailed, releasing the sounds that had caught her attention, but could not seem to move. Her breath caught. The creature obviously needed help. She looked over her shoulder, but there was no one close enough to call to for help. Instead, she released a howl that she hoped would draw attention and then took the steps two at a time, hitting the beach running.

Without a care for her own safety, she ran straight up to the creature, her eyes wide with concern. Though she had doubts the creature would understand her, she quickly began speaking to it in the most calming voice she could manage while dunking herself completely in the water that crashed around the sea wolf. "Shhh, relax little one, you are in good paws." Carefully, slowly, she reached a paw toward the creature, as one would a dangerous injured animal. If it let her touch it, she would move closer, allowing her soaking fur to push against the rubbery skin that was drying by the moment. "I am here to help you," she murmured softly, adding some nonsensical but comforting sounds; she hummed softly a tune with no direction, simply to keep the creature's attention.

She glanced toward the steps. Someone please hurry!

The young wolf was trotting through a nearby flower field, nosing a flower occasionally as he hummed a random song. At six months, he was well on his way to reaching his adult height. The perks of reaching full height quickly as a wolf. Despite his growth though, Skylar was as perky as ever, grinning happily and enjoying the world overall. A butterfly landed on his shoulder, and he took it with him on his little walk, showing the resting critter all the things Gemini had. A tour guide for the butterfly! That's what he was! "And THAT is our wall!" he was just telling the monarch, gesturing with his maw at the tall thing.

Now what? "Perhaps the beach?" he asked his little friend, though the butterfly had no response. Walking towards the sounds of the waves crashing against the shore, the six-month-old pup eagerly thought of the ocean. He loved to swim, loved it ever since Anky had taught him to traverse the water! The waves were fun to hop in, and the water was cool to the touch. He never minded the sand either, it was very pretty in his opinion. Skylar could already picture the ocean, but knew it would come within his view pretty soon.

A howl pierced the air, and his ears perked to listen. Hm? Someone was calling from the beach? Skylar trotted a little faster now, glancing down to see if the butterfly was there. Nope, it had flown away it seems. The star child frowned, but there was nothing to be done for it. He broke into a run instead, eager to reach the beach faster as well as see what was going on. The closer he got, the more he began to hear the clicks and whistles in the air. Was that what he thought it was...?

"Sea-wolfy??" he called out just as he reached the head of the stairs that led down to the beach. Skylar peered down and caught sight of just what he had mentioned. "SEA WOLF!" he cried in alarm as he began to hop down the steps and reach the sand. "Iri!" The young male called to his friend Iri, since he now spotted her near the small sea wolf. He ran over to her, tongue lolling as he caught his breath, but he smiled up at the older female regardless. "Hi! What's goin' on?" he asked, looking at the sea wolf then looking back at Iridescent.

"Sea wolf need our help?" He didn't know what was wrong, but he could sense the urgency of the situation. "I will help! What do I do?" Skylar was ready to do whatever it took to help his fellow sea-wolfy!

Anky had spent a good part of the morning swimming back and forth to his hidden lair in the high tide cave, doing his best to make the space homey. As he finally emerged from the cave entrance the beast took in a deep lungful of fresh sea air, enjoying the white noise created by the waves and the solitude of this stretch of beach. Anky enjoyed his new home, his new packmates but there were times, like now, that he preferred the isolation, private time to soak up his surroundings and reflect on the ocean's beauty. Taking in another deep breath, letting it out slowly, blue eyes scanning the surface of the rough ocean that stretched out before him, hoping to spot a lone black dorsal fin but there was no sign of the matriarch today. Considering for a moment, the water seemed angry today it would probably be easier to cross the beach rather than swim the shoreline today. Turning slowly away from the cliffs, Anky headed down the coast, black paws licked by the intermittent rush of saltwater that licked at the sandy shore.

Trotting slowly, head held high, he thought he heard a familiar sound up ahead but that puzzled him. The sound was a long, high whistle, almost identical to the calls he'd heard from the large female sea wolf that visited him frequently. However, it was most certainly coming from the beach, not the ocean, and Anky knew for a fact, sea wolves COULD NOT live on the land. Only once before had he come across a stranded Orca and the bloody scene came rippling back to him, it had been a young male, he'd been snagged on a shallow bit of rock and the tide had gone out rapidly. The poor animal had screamed and thrashed, causing the sharp rocks to slice into his thick skin, eventually, despite Anky's attempts to help the young animal stopped moving. By the time the tide had come in, the orca had died, his mother and other family members raged and called from nearby, obviously racked with grief. Panic set in as the hellhound's heart rate picked up, beating rapidly as he surged forward, sprinting in the direction of the cry.

As Anky neared the source of the chaos he could see the small sea wolf calf lying in the sand, only it's tail rested in the retreating surf. Two other forms registered as he approached, Iri and Skylar, a rush of relief hit him, he wasn't alone. It had been something he was dreading, trying to save a stranded whale without help, though he wasn't sure two adults and an adolescent could do much, it was better than nothing. Anky gave out a shout as he approached, Skylar! Iri! He greeted them, his voice tainted with fear and a hint of panic, he offered a small smile in hopes of reassuring them both. Bumping young Skylar softly with his hip in greeting, his eyes meeting the almost grown whelp's, Skylar was a good pup and it gave Anky an odd sense of pride to see him growing larger. He then turned to gently nudge Iri's cheek with his head affectionately, she had been his first friend in Gemini and she held a special place in his heart. Anky sighed, looking from Skylar to Iri, Well, you wanted to meet a Sea Wolf... he tried to lighten the atmosphere with a bit of humor but it came out drier than he'd anticipated. He turned to the young Orca, he leaned down to look her in the eye and offered her a soft shushing sound and whispered We've got you. He lifted his head and looked toward the ocean and there, just like last time, were the gathering of black dorsal fins cutting through the rough water. The calf's family, desperate to help but unable to do anything, the water too shallow for them to get any closer, instead the small gathering seemed to pace, back and forth just past the break.

Orion was quite fond of the black sand beaches that Gemini had claimed as their own. He liked how warm the sand got in the morning and the evening--perhaps a bit too hot during the crux of the day, but a pleasant place to nap when the sun wasn't at it's apex. The ocean illicited a sort of peace that was mostly unknown to the black behemoth. He'd been on such unsure footing for so long; back in his pride, then traveling, and traveling some more. Gemini was the first real time he'd ever been able to rest.

Furious clicks and whistles drew his attention from his sleepy daydreaming. He looked down the beach, and in the far distance, he could just make out some massive, wriggling mass of black and white in the sand. What on earth?

As he stood and started on his way towards the strange creature, several wolves showed up. A streak of blueish purple, a smaller red speck, another black and white streak similar to the creature that had drawn his attention in the first place. As he got closer, his confusion only grew. Just what was that thing? He stopped just short of where the wolves were circling around the creature, giving them all a nod of greeting.

"What is this thing?" He asked curiously. "And what are you all doing to it?" Orion could hardly help his ignorance; after all, there had been nothing like the sea in his old home. The closest he'd really come to seeing any type of aquatic mammals had been the otters and beavers that inhabited the rivers of his old home, and those could hardly compare to the orca before him. "...do you need help?" He offered finally, head tilted slightly, confusion evident on his features.

Click, click! Kreeeeee! Click, click, kreeee!

The wind carried the shrill, panicked calls along the beach. It whistled through the nooks and crannies, delving deep into the stone. Bouncing off the walls of slivered pathways, it found home in a pocket beneath the waves. It bloomed, echoing with each distressing wail the calf made. The being within the underwater lair didn't stir at first. The gentle waves splashing against the stone served as his lullaby, but after a few minutes? He began to stir, hearing that faint sound over the ocean's lazy swishing along the rocks. The seal fur was slick beneath his hands as he blearily peered about, the sail along his lower back rising questioningly. What...? Who...?

Wait.

Gollum tilted his head, and listened. He focused on that background blip, and if his eyes could widen they would have. A whale? Crying? He was already on the move before he realized what he was doing, crawling from his perch to dip beneath the waves; cold sheathing his body in its familiar grasp, his sails tucking down as he used his powerful tail to propel himself forward. Slap, slap... Slap, slap! Through the water he could faintly make out the sound of the whale slapping its tail, but from how faint it was? It was either very far away, or very young. Too young, and with the echoing sobs in the opposite direction? The family knew something was wrong, but there was nothing they could do. Whales were not immortal, and some things were always out of their grasp. So the shark swam, his arms and legs tucked against his sides as his body swayed back and forth.

A few minutes of this and he slowed down, the sounds louder in the water now. He breached the water to take a look, only his eyes and head fins visible from the shore; a speck against the glittering waves. His jaw dropped as he witnessed the spectacle on the shore, but they focused on Akhlut. Was it-?! ...No. No, it wasn't. While similarly colored to the trapped babe, that was definitely a land dweller. He swallowed thickly, sorrowed at the loss of potential brethren, but returned his attention to the task at hand. He had to help. He may not be Complete, but as someone In Between he had to uphold the ocean law. They were all to die within the sea's embrace: whether by age, or foe. Not... not like this. Not without truth to guide them, to tell their story before their bones disappeared in the dark.

He leaped into the air, the big orange sail flashing as it lifted up, letting the land lubbers know he was on the way. He fell back into the water with a heavy splash, and then swam forward. Like a torpedo released from its holding, the hellion used his powerful tail to surge onto the beach; carrying with him a wave of water, which he directed with his tail to hit the crying child. The tendrils reaching out, stroking over the orca's flopping body as he thrummed in his chest; letting the sound vibrate through that thick skin in a soothing manner. "Water," He rasped wetly, "Needs water." Gollum didn't introduce himself, didn't explain his existence to them; just backed up a bit to use his powerful water, pushing the water to hit the poor babe. "Dying..." That clawed hand reaching out, touching the Complete's beautiful skin; the dormant power within, waiting to be unleashed when she reached maturity.

The arrowhead turned his head, the void-like eyes gazing at Akhlut. "Help me."

It was tiring, but Gollum did not stop from using his tail to keep her from drying out; the tendrils making soothing strokes along her body, his own wet warbles joining her frantic pleading.

The young orca stilled her writhing form as one after another land dwellers appeared, their strange four-legged bodies and fur coats caused her to consider them cautiously. Not that she was in any position to object to their presence but she held her breath, hoping they weren't about to devour her. They made sounds that, to her ears, were harsh and jumbled together they sounded nothing like the long, elegant language that her kind spoke. One of the largest land dwellers mystified her, he had so much fur and looked different than the others. She had no knowledge of these beasts but by their movements and worried looks, the baby hoped that perhaps they might be able to free her.

Her slick skin was beginning to dry out due to the heat of the sun, it wouldn't take long before it began to burn and crack. She whistled desperately when a surge of water washed over her as something from the ocean launched itself onto the beach behind the baby. From this angle, she couldn't see what it was but it had brought with him a refreshing break from the blistering sun. The beast croaked at the others and continued to assault her with wave after wave of cool water, easing the immediate threat.

Meanwhile, the girl laid heavily in the sand, the weight of her massive body compressing her vital organs. Breathing required more effort, the sucking sound as her blowhole opened and pulled in another lungful of air, became louder. Her eyes swirled around looking at the group that had gathered around her, it seemed they were here to help. She closed her eyes and focused on the sound of the ocean behind her and the faint whisper of her family, a family that was swimming back and forth, desperately trying to help. She would lay still and compliant as the land animals tried to help her.

||OOC: Ok, do as you will with her, I'll post with her again if they manage to get her into the open water. Feel free to RP her actions until then.||

As others joined her efforts, Iri's mind swirled with ideas. First, Skylar's arrival and call of "Iri!" eased her mind. Of everyone she'd met, the pup seemed to know the most about the sea wolves, carrying an interest in them that matched her own. "Sea wolf need our help? I will help! What do I do?" She turned to him; he was far too small to give any real help to moving the orca calf, but maybe...

"Sky, you think you could try to make that whistling sound she's making? See if maybe you can calm her down, the more she flails the further she digs herself in. Maybe if she sees us making an effort to communicate, she'll realize we are here to help."

"Skylar! Iri!" That voice certainly came as a relief. Anky! "Well, you wanted to meet a Sea Wolf..." She glanced at him with her tongue poking out.
"This isn't exactly what I was going for," she said with a nervous chuckle. She followed his gaze and saw what he saw; the black fins slicing through the waves, they seemed to be pacing just off shore. Good, at least if they could get her in the water, there would be someone there to take over and make sure she was safe.

The next arrival received a quick double take. The lion was huge. Her mind spun a little faster. Surely all that muscle had to fit in somewhere. "What is this thing? And what are you all doing to it?" She caught herself and broke off her open stare to answer him. "Sea wolf, she is supposed to be far off shore. We need to get her back in the water." "...do you need help?" "I... wonder if you could go behind her and try to dig her out? It won't be easy, the tide is going to undo most of your work, but if we can get her sloped toward the deeper part, maybe we can push her and let the outgoing tide assist."

The next creature arrived; Iri had thought Anky was built strangely, this creature was more like his inverse... a sea creature with some small canine-like features. He didn't even ask if he could help; he jumped right in with a talent that might very well be the most important puzzle piece as he worked at soaking her skin, summoning Anky to the same task. She nodded at her friend and addressed the pair. "How long can you two keep that up? We need as much time as you can give us, tell me if you need anything."

If Orion had followed her suggestion, she would join him, sliding her paws deep into the sand and pushing it away from her tail.

Skylar may not be an expert on the creatures, but he had a basic understanding that the sea wolfies did NOT belong on the sand! With worried blue eyes he looked over the beautiful friend, who just looked distressed. Languages may differ among species, but body language was universal. And the boy was nothing if not observant. Anky soon showed up, greeting them. "Anky!!" he exclaimed, tail wagging momentarily as the other ran up. Though quickly he remembered that the situation was a little less than happy, and it made him sober up quickly.

Another approached, and it stopped Skylar in his tracks, eyes widening as he stared. "Woaaahhhhhh, you're BIG!" he said, looking at the feline. Not that he knew what a feline was, really. Fluffy wolf? "You're a big wolf!" Bigger than even Momma! Then he heard Iri tell him something and he whirled to listen. What? "Sky, you think you could try to make that whistling sound she's making? See if maybe you can calm her down, the more she flails the further she digs herself in. Maybe if she sees us making an effort to communicate, she'll realize we are here to help." Ears perking, Skylar decided he liked that idea! Eagerly he nodded, hopping up and down and wriggling in place. "YES I will talk to sea-wolfy!" He would be able to help!

Running over to where the sea-wolfy lay, he approached near it's head and tilted his own, looking at it. Laying on his belly, near the creature's eye, Skylar crawled forward. "Hi!" he greeted it, tail thumping on the sand. Then remembering Iri's request, he lifted his muzzle and threw his best whistle impression through a tiny 'o' formed with his lips. His breath whistled out from in between teeth. It wasn't nearly as harsh or loud as what the baby sea-wolf could pronounce, but he was trying! Skylar paused to catch his breath, then lifted his head to try again to whistle, throwing his head back with the effort of whistling and trying to communicate with it.

Because of his little task placed upon him by Iridescent, he missed Gollum's appearance on the ocean shore. He would have said hi and waved at him, but his sole focus was on helping his sea-wolf friend. His back was to the rest of the group, and Skylar alone remained at the larger creature's eye so that he could maintain eye contact and keep whistling. He threw all his efforts into the whistle, and even though it wasn't quite the expert call they all sang to each other, the star child was doing his best to try and replicate it!

As the hellhound looked out over the water something leaped from the surf and charged toward the shore. Anky bristled, the creature he glimpsed was unknown to him and its appearance along with the beached calf didn't sit right with him. Perhaps this animal was responsible for the calf's current situation, the hellhound couldn't be sure, however before he could react the strange looking animal was on the shore. It gurgled out information that Anky knew to hold true, his hackles soothed and he nodded to the beast. He had many questions but this was not the time, shooting Iri a questioning glance, he leaped into the surf beside the stranger and mimicked his motions with his tail fluke. Creating wave after wave of salty water that gushed over the babe, keeping her sensitive skin from drying out.

Anky watched proudly as Iri gave orders and Skylar did his very best Sea Wolf impression, which seemed to help the calf calm, or maybe it was just exhaustion that was stilling the calf. During the chaos, a massive feline had arrived and despite his size, Anky had missed his entrance. It was someone he'd not met before but he seemed concerned for the young orca and surely he must belong to Gemini to be so deep beyond her borders so Anky figured he was ok.

Anky stepped a bit to the side to allow Iri, and hopefully the large feline, room to dig a trench though he had no idea if that would help her at all. Blue eyes looked to the unusual stranger as they continued to send waves over the youngling, they were unlike anything Anky had ever encountered on land or in the ocean. The creature as a whole was magnificent but as Anky took a closer look he could see similarities with several other animals, it was curious to him that such an animal existed. It gave the whale-tailed canine a sense of kinship that he was not alone in the world.

Turning from his thoughts he looked over the scene, it was a curious gathering of chaos but one that filled him with hope. This calf would not suffer the same fate as his last encounter of this kind, of that he was sure. A plan began to formulate in his head, they needed to grade the sand behind the calf further, to create a sloping channel and then a bit of a wall or mound in front of her to keep her from going forward. Then perhaps he could get the stranger and the rest of the calf's family to create a big enough surge that it would lift the calf off the beach, then Iri, Skylar and the big cat could use the moment to float her back to deeper water.

The whale-tailed hellion ceased his wave making and gave a quick yip to get everyone's attention, I have an idea! Iri and... his eyes landed on the big cat acutely aware that he didn't know the fellow's name. you, I need you to dig a sloping funnel behind the calf. Narrow by her tail and getting deeper and wider toward the ocean. Skylar, you're doing awesome,
keep it up. While you're talking to her can you create a bit of a sandy wall right in front of her, like a sandcastle, as big as you can?
Anky turned to the stranger and with pleading eyes he questioned, hoping the animal would understand him, though he couldn't be sure. We're going to make a big wave and so they he motioned to the two wolves and the feline can float her back into deep water. He looked at the three on the beach as he stood in chest-deep water. Did you hear that? I'll signal to you before we go, when you see it, wait for the wave, with any luck it should be deep enough to at least lift most of her weight off the sand and then hopefully you three can push her back into deeper water.

His mind raced as he gave the orders, unsure if the plan would work or if he could even get the help of the pod, without it this probably wouldn't work. He shot Gollum a determined look and a quick nod before plunging into the sea, straight for the family of desperate sea wolves that were pacing nearby.

ooc: Bullet points to carry this along, I'm a little short on muse for O, sorry!

  • Orion laughs merrily at Skylar, says, "I'm not a wolf, young one, I'm a lion!"
  • Nods at Iri's direction and starts digging behind the calf, avoiding thrashing tail.
  • Tide does undo most of his work. He works harder.
  • Starts scooping the sand off to the side as far as he can propel it so that the ocean can't bring as much of it back.
