The watering hole [Machete]
« on: May 20, 2017, 06:04:06 PM »
As the sun reached it's peak in the sky, the young boy was wandering off again. The four-month old pup was always on the move, whether spending time with his family, bumping into others, or simply being by himself. Maybe it was a way to keep himself from thinking too much, or maybe it was just his way of being. Whichever it was, Skylar always seemed to have a destination on his mind if you were to look at him -- he always walked with a determined pace, a little happy prance in his step as though he knew exactly where he was headed or who he was off to see.

Even if, in reality, he almost never had a destination in mind.

More often than not the young pup was simply traveling through Gemini on a whim, simply following wherever his nose or heart led him. Sometimes this got him into trouble, often times it dove him into adventures he would remember forever. Today though, he was merely walking to see what he could explore today, add to his ever-growing collection of knowledge as he learned more and more about Gemini and the world around him. Occasionally he found his direction of travel changing as he chased the occasional cricket, followed the few squirrels he would find, and generally got distracted.

Eventually Skylar caught sight of the faerie pools shimmering just a few meters away, and it made his ears perk. Tongue hanging out from his mouth, he realized how hot he felt. Maybe it was time for a swim? He hadn't gone swimming in a while, not since the lessons he had gotten from Anky. Looking at the shallow pools gave him an idea though; maybe it would be safe to go swimming in there! "Looks safe 'nuff," he commented to himself as he approached one of the shallow pools.

Sniffing around his selected pool of choice, Skylar eventually dipped a paw into the cool water, sighing as he felt his body already cool off from running around on dry land all day. A few moments more and he was walking around on the shallow end, water reaching up to his belly as he splashed around. "Heehee~" he squealed as he began to run around in happiness, making a lot of splashes and droplets of water dotting his head and back. It wasn't long before he was soaked and standing in the water, allowing the ripples to calm down and slowly disappear.

Glancing down, the pup peered into the clear pool, looking at the bottom of the pond. It was the same shimmering rocks he had seen his brother Genim pick at one time. He pawed at a few, shifting them around and listening to the clacking of the rocks as they bumped into each other. Giggling, he continued to trot around the pool, slowly entering the deeper water before turning and going back without allowing his legs to leave the bottom rocks. As he ran around though, his paws slipped one the smooth rocks and down he went, disappearing beneath the surface with a loud SPLASH!

A few moments later his head popped back up above the water, a look of surprise on his face before he broke into giggles. If anyone was at the shore by now, Skylar would look over and smile happily, his tail wagging in the water. "HI! Wanna join? It's nice and cool!" he'd invite the other joyfully.

Machete was prone to wandering, as most growing little boys were, but time and again, he found himself back at the shores of the fairy pools. He didn't yet have the words to describe why, but he'd come to favor them as a hangout spot, liking the breeze coming off them on windy days, the vivid glitter of their surface on sunny ones. He liked to watch the ripples, concentric rings born of anything from a tossed pebble to an invading toe. Sometimes, if he was very quiet, he saw birds and rabbits approach the shore for a drink. Maybe another pup his age would give chase; he just watched them wide-eyed and took in their odd scents. Maybe later he'd try to mimic them, the songbird's melody, the rabbit's swift hopping gait.

He came again today, turning the corner of a rocky outcrop, and -- oh! Someone else! Not just someone else, but another kid! Machete reached the shore, tail wagging shyly, ears lain against his head, and watched with... mild concern as Skylar vanished (!) beneath the water. Sure was dark down there. This other boy didn't mind?

Apparently not, because up he came with a splash and a laugh, dog-paddling like... well. You know. Machete perked up and cocked his head to one side, puppy-like. He'd been spotted!

"Oh... um... s-sure?" Almost blurted out "there aren't any sharks in there right" like a real twit, but bit his tongue at the last moment. No, he couldn't look like a big scaredy in front of another kid! Maybe that was why he backed up them, pawing the ground like a bull about to charge, and barked in what he hoped was a brave voice, "Here I come!"

CHARGE! Bound, bound, bound, splash, up to his shoulders at once, hey this was easier than he -- oh no.

"EEEEEEK! IT'S COLD!!"

His head whipped around, ears perking up lopsidedly on his head. Eyes wide, he looked around. No one else was nearby. Who would save this wretched soul from their frigid plight? Gemini's knight... was gone, fled into the night without looking back. He licked his nose with his chipped tongue, and squared his shoulders. He didn't have a choice. He'd bear this mantle until his brother returned from his calling; willingly give it back now if it meant his sibling would be back in the den with their broken family, warm and safe and loved.

Taking a breath, the aurora charged through the long grass, his heavy paws slapping against the ground as the older child raced to Machete's voice. His ears flapped wildly atop his skull as he plowed onward, the feeling only making sorrow well up in him; how fast he could go! And yet, it wasn't enough. This ghostly sensation of deja vu from the night ago when he tried to catch Hyperion and hold him back from his flight. As he sprinted, he wondered if it was his place? To keep his family from spreading their wings and finding their greatness in life? Would that make him... bad, if he did this? He wanted to, he didn't want anyone to go like Tauro had, but-

Vision flickered as he looked down. There were babies in the fairy pools. That's nice. Definitely better than his current train of thought. They were cute! With their little faces and-!!

Wait a minute- babies!?

At his current speed he'd squash them into smithereens!

His eyes widened to the size of saucers as he yelped, trying to slow down, but his momentum was just too great by this point. He tripped over his front paws and turned into a multi-color spinning wheel of death; eyes swirling in their helplessly as he howled in distress. He careened over a rock that acted as a pseudo diving board, propelling his confused body over the two little boys in the pool. He started to uncurl by this point, feeling weightless as he soared through the air before it all came back as he landed in one of the adjoining pools. SPLASH! A tsunami wave curving into theirs from his body's wake as he sank to the bottom, body resting on those cool stones. He laid there fully submerged for almost a minute, eyes finally screwed shut before his body remembered one tiny important detail.

He couldn't breathe underwater.

Corona's eyes snapped open as he threw himself upward, sitting up with a ragged gasp for air. He coughed at the same time, sputtering and shuddering within the pool he found himself in. Stomach somewhat sick feeling, the larger boy swayed where he sat as he shook his head from side to side rapidly. When the world finally stopped spinning, he blinked languidly, eyes seeking theirs as he looked at Machete and Skylar. His lips parted in puffing breaths as he asked raggedly, "Ha... ha, s'okay?" Still lightheaded, he slowly sank to his belly with a soft groan as he rested his chin on the lip of his pool; still able to watch them, but definitely unable to help them if they needed it.

Hyperion made it look so easy.

He better come back soon.

Gemini wouldn't last long with Corona as its knight.

Indeed the boy didn't mind when the water enveloped him and he was in the relative silence that was being underwater. But Anky had taught him to go back up to the surface (no breathing underwater, after all!) and so Skylar popped back up quickly, laughing at himself because why not? It was funny after all. No need to cry over being in the pool. But he had spotted the other pup, and he remembered him! He had met them when they were with their own Mom outside of their den. This pup had asked what Gemini was, in which Skylar was all too happy to provide the information!

"Oh... um... s-sure?" Yay! That was pretty much a yes in Skylar's book. He perked up and wagged his tail, splashing more water as he did so. Eagerly the star child watched as the other pup began to back up and ready himself for the charge into the water. Wait a minute... maybe Skylar should move. He inched over to the right, remaining in the water though even as the "Here I come!" came and Machete ran at the water. Straight on in he went, Skylar cheering him on the whole time. "You can do it!!" he chirped, giggling when the water droplets landed on his already soaked body.

What he didn't expect was the next reaction. "EEEEEEK! IT'S COLD!!" Skylar hadn't thought so, but then again, he had been sitting in the water for a while now. But he still tilted his head at the other pup. "How c'n I help with the cold water??" he asked, furrowing his brow. The pup wanted to help his fellow pup! Anything he could do to make it warmer? Maybe run around some more? He splashed the water a bit, maybe the movement would warm up the water like his body warmed up after running through the flowers for a long time.

Sounds of pattering running steps made him look up again, ears perking as he caught sight of another young wolf. Who was that..? They were coming pretty fast. Skylar stood up, tail straight up as he realized this third youngster had tripped! "CAREFUL!!!" he cried out, alarmed to see him rolling down towards them. Then he SAILED OVER THEM LIKE A BIRD!! Skylar emitted a loud "EEP!" and fell over in surprise, splashing once again. But then he scrambled to his paws to look at the other who had landed in the pool next door.

"Where are dey?" he asked Machete as he perched himself at the lip of their pool, front paws braced against the dry ground while his lower body remained within the water. He was starting to look concerned when the other one popped up, and Skylar breathed in relief. "DERE you are!" His tail wagged eagerly even as the newcomer rested against the shore of his own pool. "Ha... ha, s'okay?" Skylar nodded eagerly, lifting a paw up in greeting. "S'okay!!" he replied, assuring the other pup that all was well!

As it always was for the star child.
