Gathering Dust (Caesar)
« on: April 08, 2017, 11:54:28 AM »

Cracked dry earth does not make for good plant life. Thus, being an herbalist in the aptly named Death Valley was not an easy job. It was this fact that had Strawberry wandering the edge of the forest to the south, following the line of the lake. It still wasn't the lush, living dirt that made for such good growth, but the young herbalist had grown up here; she had a fairly good idea of how to compensate. Following her own scent markings, she approached her private garden, tucked just out of sight in the Forest Maze. She'd carefully laid dead leaves and foliage, building up a thing layer of nutritious compost in which to foster her garden.

She felt the tension in her spine relax as her eyes raked over the collection of herbs. In one corner, the tiny yellow flowers known as tansy were just beginning to bloom. It provided a treatment for the nasty business of worms, but could be extracted carefully to become a harmful toxin. Her mouth twitched a little at that. She had a small supply of the toxin stashed away elsewhere. She had never been called upon for it, but one of the unspoken responsibilities of her rank was to provide the ability for assassins to kill an enemy without violence.

The bright green leaves of the mentha plant and the soft purple flowers of the hyssop variation stirred in some unfelt breeze, catching her attention. Ah, now that was a useful plant for treating many ills. She had several variations of the plant growing in one corner of her garden, including a toxic version of the plant. The catnip plants nearby had leaves nearly identical, but the flowers that were budding would be the significant difference to tell them apart.

She made her way through the rest of her plants, one section at a time, doing some general tending. She collected leaves and petals here and there as she worked, losing herself in the one thing she truly enjoyed, letting time slip by unnoticed. She kept one ear perked, listening for movement beyond the edges of her garden.

Caesar, all but a month and some handful of days old, wandered about in all the waddling glory of a toddler.

An angry, aggressive, destructive toddler. The kind you would take to a specialist with great concern of their behavior. 'Doctor! She painted dead people all over her wall!' one day, 'Doctor, her dolls have been stabbed and beheaded, and when we asked her why, she claimed they laughed at her!' But luckily for Caesar.. her parents were not worried about the mental instability of their children. They celebrated it.

If she were  a human, she would toddle around with a knife tucked behind the little ribbon on her dress, hands clasped behind her back as she skipped and hummed and sang sweet songs of Gods and Death. They would even rhyme sometimes.

Caesar, however, was a wolf, and a predator from birth, she found her prey: bright and pink with vivid green eyes. The little girl had been attracted by all the plants, but the arrival of an herbalist startled her into hiding, where she planned her attack in secrecy. But she was too small. She knew this. She hated it.

She cursed herself inwardly and stepped from the hidey holes of shadows, ears tucked back as coyly as possible before she cleared her throat. "What do they do?" she beeped, "The bright ones, the pretty ones. What do they do?"

They all had a purpose, or else why let them live?

"What do they do?" Strawberry spun, her emerald eyes wide in surprise. The herbalist looked over the dark puppy with the bright yellow paws. A little smirk crossed her face. "The bright ones, the pretty ones. What do they do?" Her eyes travelled to the garden and back to the puppy. She didn't have to look to answer the pup's question and she didn't turn her back on anyone, not even a youth.

"The pretty ones?" she sneered. "The bright ones. Is that how you gauge a plant's worthiness?" She shook her head in disbelief and pointed to a strange, five-petaled purple flower nestled among large, raindrop shaped leaves. "These plants are not here to be pretty. That one is sweet violet, it can be ground into a paste to treat a cold. It can also be shredded and put in water, then heated over the tar pits to create a drink that helps headaches and sore muscles."

She gestured to tiny flowers that looked like yellow dandelions with white petals surrounding, peeking like tiny suns from among small grass-green leaves. "That one is feverfew. Also good for headaches, but it's main purpose here is to relieve anxiety in slaves who are fighting back. Makes them more compliant. When feverfew isn't enough, we provide those poppies, which can completely dull their minds if used the right way." She gestured at the flourishing yellow poppies in their bed of long stringy leaves and stems toward the center of the garden.

She took a few steps to her left, pointing at tiny red flowers that grew in bunches and were framed by dark, blade shaped leaves. "That one produces a sap that, when extracted and fed to a wolf, will make them empty the contents of their stomach. Useful when puppies get into things they shouldn't be," she added pointedly before moving to stand by the little tansy buds she had examined first upon her arrival.

"And this one right here, when used by the right set of paws, attached to a wolf who knows EXACTLY what they are doing, can kill an enemy," she finished, her voice gruff. She watched the puppy with narrowed lids, curious about her interest and watching for reactions to each plant she explained. Which ones would interest her more?

Wolves usually had better things to do than examine plants. Maybe she would bore the little girl. But maybe not? Only time would tell.

'The pretty ones?' the face spoke, sneering, and Caesar knew that expression- 'The bright ones. Is that how you gauge a plant's worthiness?' came a tone that burned the insides of the little girl, who scrunched her own face in a glower, a growl. Strawberry began to explain what they did, and although the girl listened, very little registered. She was so young, she would need to be taught all this again if necessary, but it was something else that kept her there, and not the lecture of her newly regarded teacher.

'This one is feverfew-' a reliever of fits for slaves, and that's all that she acknowledged for the little yellow flowers before the pink wolf moved on. Poppies- they were shown with a gesture, and she acknowledged with a stiff nod. Red flowers with leaves had sap- whatever the heck that was- and they made you barf, and.. was that a threat? The bi-colored eyes narrowed at the green-eyed wolf. Puppies getting into things? Was that what this mongrel thought she, the Great Caesar, was doing?

But none of those meant anything to her, not in comparison to the last plant Strawberry introduced into the lesson. "What's that one's name?" she asked with a growl, "You didn't give me all their names," she barked, "How am I supposed to know what they are if you don't tell me their NAMES?" her front paws struck the earth in a rage.

"How do you KNOW IT KILLS? Did you kill someone with it?
" her words came out in breathless yaps and howls, "SHOW ME!" she demanded, her heart raced as a strange pounding filled her ears. "USE IT or you're a LIAR."

sorry for the baby throwing her tantrum ;0;

"What's that one's name? You didn't give me all their names," came the rude reply. Oh the little one wanted to play that game? Raw furrowed her brow and gave a toothy grin.

"Oh you like that one, do you?" she sneered. That was one question answered for her, and it certainly revealed quite a bit to her. Not unlike herself at that age. Hmm.

"How am I supposed to know what they are if you don't tell me their NAMES?" In a quick, fluid motion, she moved close to the puppy and leered down at her, head held high in a clear show of dominance. Her emerald eyes sought to catch the girl's different colored eyes, wanting to see what sort of  "Little girl, you have quite the voice, don't you? You better learn when to use it and when not to. Those are tansies, and they have many healing properties too. But my duty is to know all the uses of these plants."

"How do you KNOW IT KILLS? Did you kill someone with it?" She watched as the puppy got more and more worked up with every word from her lips. Curiouser and curiouser.

"You are a yappy one, aren't you? We have ways of testing these plants, on those who deserve no mercy."

"SHOW ME! USE IT or you're a LIAR!" She bit back a violent laugh at the youth's demand, as if this unranked baby could tell her what to do. But Raw's interest was certainly peaked. What a vicious puppy. She sat back on her hind legs and peered thoughtfully at the little girl.

Tell me, how do you propose I show you? I will not poison myself for your entertainment, and surely you shall not try it, for then how would you see the outcome?" She leaned close to the pup's face, her expression smug. She calculated each movement, pushing certain buttons on purpose, challenging the youth. She wanted to see what this little one was made of... and what could be made of her.

"Speaking of names unspoken, what is your name, little girl?"

Caesar knew no King but her father, and she knew no force or authority like the Rosas, and this.. this BEAST dare stand above her? Threaten her with height?

And she would have that for how long over the little yappy girl? Months?

Months before Caesar would show Strawberry who was boss here, months before the pink wolf would know raw vengeance and the sting of blood by way of- "CAESAR," she declared in the face of the one who dare look down on her.

"My name is Caesar and if you know what's good for you, you'll find someone to use it on,[/color]" her little teeth- sharp as blades, as she is a child after all- bared themselves at the much larger wolf. "If you don't, you're a fake and a liar and you should eat the flower yourself as punishment," because.. you know.. the little girl could demand what she wanted, couldn't she?

She was just a child, she didn't know better, not yet.

She watched, somewhat amused, as the girl roiled in anger. The little thing was getting herself so worked up. She could stand to learn some patience, but she was young still. She had time to come into her potential. And potential she had, with the energy she displayed, if she was trained in something she loved, she could prove to be quite an asset to Oukoku-Kai and the Rosas. "CAESAR" came the response. "My name is Caesar and if you know what's good for you, you'll find someone to use it on, If you don't, you're a fake and a liar and you should eat the flower yourself as punishment" She sneered at the child, her eyes growing darker.

"You think you can threaten me, little Caesar? I don't know whose runt you are, but unless you are an unknown daughter of one of the Rosas, I don't answer to you," she snapped, flashing her teeth back. "That being said, I've never known one so young to be so interested in what I do, not since I was a puppy. So I will do what you ask." Without another word, she grabbed her collection of snippings and slung it over her back, heading deeper into the maze. She simply expected the little girl would know to follow. She happened to have one of her little deadly pouches of tansy extract with her, and she had a thought to find and capture something alive. Maybe a squirrel or rabbit. She glanced back over her shoulder to check on the puppy, then lifted her head to listen for movement.

A rustle of leaves. She crouched low and moved in a blur. "Caesar!" she snapped, calling the puppy over to assist. Her claws pierced the tail of a large gray squirrel, which squirmed violently, screeching for its life. "Reach into my sack," she instructed, tossing her head to point at the pouch she'd dropped in her scurry. "There will be a small pouch of rabbit skin, bound the size of your paw. Bring it here."

Now she could only wait to see what the puppy would do.

'You think you can threaten me, little Caesar?' the pink doll snapped, a crack of lightning in her voice while the dual-eyed child stared in childish defiance. 'I don't know whose runt you are-' HOW DOES SHE NOT KNOW?- 'I don't answer to you, it continued to spew disappointment and fuel to her tiny fire.

And that fire began to blaze.

"I am the daughter of CROW!," roared the child, paw striking the earth as spittle flew, as she was no more familiar with his rank then her mother's- Captain Ni, which she took to be a nickname above all us, "SON OF INK!" because even she knew what she was, this young, she distinguished the difference between herself and her sisters. She was an oddity at best.

"My name is Caesar," howled the child as a reminder, although Strawberry very clearly did not forget, having spoken it with a harsh enough tone to cause the little girl's nose to flare. How. Dare. HER.

It was only the pink wolf's willingness to do as the tyrant brat asked that caused the yellow-pawed baby to calm. "OKAY~!" to the request being answered, and even to the unnoticable order, and the toddler hobbled off to do as she was told.

'Reach into my sack,' and the small snout did so, digging out the 'small pouch of rabbit skin,' which she held gently, akin to a hound with a fallen fowl, that she placed down at the pink paws of her new teacher, if only for their meeting.

"OKAY, show me now," enthusiastically, followed by your typical begrudged, "..please"

"I am the daughter of CROW!" came the snarled reply. "SON OF INK!" She caught that, although didn't comment. Son? Emerald eyes peered at the little ball of angry energy. Peculiar little thing. "My name is Caesar." She rolled her eyes. "Cool your jets, kid, I heard you the first time." Crow and Ink, the names sounded familiar, although she had never met either of them. The were much higher up the chain than she regularly dealt with. Although, it couldn't hurt to have the ear of the child from that pairing. She watched the pup sizzle in her rage and couldn't help but chuckle. Maybe she would reign in the bitchyness. Clearly, she had the pup's attention.

"OKAY-!" the pup shouted and drew her attention back to the present. Her eyes found the struggling, wide eyed squirrel. Carefully, she used her free paw to pin the squirming rodent's body in the dirt. She released the tail and lifted the pouch over it's mouth. "OKAY, show me now, please." She smirked a little at the added nicety. Ahh, there is hope for this one yet. She carefully opened the skin and poured the small dose into the squirrels open, shrieking mouth. She dropped the empty skin and watched their victim wriggles slow and stop. Foam formed at the corners of its mouth and its chest heaved under her paw. The beady eyes rolled back into its head and the tail twitched. It spasmed and then stopped moving. Strawberry turned her gaze to the puppy.

"That was a very large dose for such a small creature, but I don't carry around the proper dose for a rodent. It's a lot of work to make those pouches, and normally I wouldn't waste a single drop on something I could kill easily with my own claws and teeth. But for the sake of providing demonstration, I used a large dire wolf sized dose." She watched the puppy's face for any reaction to the scene she had just been witness to. "What do you think, Caesar?"

THAT IMAGE, NICKI!!!!!!!!!!

Caesar gurgles a little, excited now that she is getting what she wanted, although she had to basically BEG TO GET IT.. She would remember, somewhere down the line, she would remember what Strawberry made her do. But her thoughts waver as the squirrel shrieks and her new comrade shows her what she wants.

The sound sends shivers down her spine and she begins to drool. The foam that came from the squirrel had the little girl liking away the slobber from her own lips and she hisses out. But this is a lesson, and she is required to listen, isn't she? The pink wolf begins to babble, and she rolls her dual-colored eyes in the process.

'That was a very large dose for such a small creature, but I don't carry around the proper dose for a rodent. It's a lot of work to make those pouches, and normally I wouldn't waste a single drop on something I could kill easily with my own claws and teeth. But for the sake of providing demonstration, I used a large dire wolf sized dose. What do you think, Caesar?'

She paused, wrinkling her nose and baring her little teeth. That's what they are, for now, too.. sharp jagged knives that she cuts her tongue on so frequently. "It suffered, didn't it? I hope it suffered," she smiles and moves closer to the pink wolf, nestling into the other's leg if capable. "If someone eats it.. if.. someone eats the squirrel.. will they get sick, too?"
