firefly lullaby [prp - ring ii]
« on: January 12, 2017, 04:05:01 PM »
Kroni had made herself busy, pondering Fini’s problem. Well, the girl most likely never considered it a problem - she was too… Kroni didn’t know what she was. Different suited her well. A wolf full of smiles, yet she never spoke a word. Who would help a stranger without expecting anything in return.

Perhaps it was fate, for Kroni to meet someone so similar and yet so different. Maybe that’s why she found herself searching for her in the early evening. Orange and pink spilled across the sky like watercolors, only a star or two out to be viewed. The wolf paid them no mind, nose locked onto the faint scent of the stranger she’d met a few days before. It took her through the second ring, one of the more popular areas. The feeling of eyes on her made her skin crawl, a lump in her throat and a shift of her eyes.

It was a relief to spot what must have been Fini’s den in a little clearing lit with fireflies. They buzzed about the grass and settled upon Kroni’s fur for a moment like a kiss before flying away. A fallen tree and scattered rocks leading to a hole in the ground, and Kroni dove in without much thought, only to escape the ground. The scent of Fini enveloped her like a blanket, soft and sweet, like flowers in spring carried by a breeze.

“Fini?” She looked about the cozy space, noting that despite it’s appearance, it was really quite spacious. But the light was dim but for a firefly or two still on Kroni’s head like a halo, a glimmer in her gold eyes as she looked about curiously.

she's underwater again
somebody's daughter and friend
in the night in the dark
in the cold as she walks far away
nobody's watching
drowning in words so sweet
mild is the water
caught as the bird once free

Night is when she was most active, sleeping until the afternoon sun was high in the sky, and only rising when it was beginning to lower itself into the twilight hours. The trees painted vibrant colors of red and orange to match the bright colors of the sky as it faded into the deepest indigo. Her small clearing a host of flowers, bushes of blackberries, and fireflies it would seem. Stepping from the briers with a bundled up leaf with a grass string wrapped around it, a parcel of sorts. Pausing for a moment to try and catch the sky, all seemed pretty clear, maybe if she'd catch a glimpse of the stars later on. She gave herself a giddy little shake, it was nice to have plans.

She had not yet caught the scent of her guest, but rather heard her first. It had been a couple of days after she had met Kroni, such a quiet girl, even compared to Fini. She always seemed so confused by the other's displays of care and kindness, as if she had never once had someone ever do those things for her. Perhaps if Fini could speak, she might have pried for an answer, she was always the type to want to know a ton about people. Sharing experiences was what brought other's together and forged lasting bonds. Ears perking forward and expression mixing with a look of interest and surprise. Ah, company! A friend! There was a certain pep in her step as she trotted briskly to the opening of her den.

A soft, muffled noise 'wuuff', the best she could do given her circumstances, and she'd stamp her paws happily at the other in greeting. She wasn't going make any notions to Kroni that it wasn't exactly the best of manners to just waltz into someone's den when they weren't home, she trusted the other female enough, and even if she didn't Fini was hardly the type to be mad or inhospitable (considering what Saboro was, this was a very bad way to go about things), she was quite innocent and oblivious after all. (Other had died for far far less)

The two of them, both with fireflies stuck to their coats, Fini beamed and breathed a bit of airy laughter. Nudging the side of Kroni's face in greeting and walking further into the den to drop her little leaf parcel among a bunch of others, sweeping a paw across the den floor to herd a bunch of stray acorns into the pile. Why acorns, you'd ask? Well, she just liked the way they looked to be honest. Turning to face the other she sat on her haunches, tail wagging. What did her friend want with lil old her, any how?

So can we be friends, sweetly
Before the mystery ends?
I love you more than the world can contain
In its lonely and ramshackle head
There’s only a shadow of me in a manner of speaking I'm dead

There was a quiet little noise, something like a dog might make, of the chuff of a big cat. Kroni's ears swiveled into the direction before the rest of her head followed suit, gold eyes alighting upon the familiar blue form her Fini. She carried a neatly wrapped parcel with her, teeth gleaming as she grinned. Kroni was half tempted to glance around to see what exactly it was that made her smile like that, as there didn't seem to be anything in particular about herself to cause such an expression. Fini stamped her feet and nudged Kroni's cheek before passing by to set the parcel down.

Kroni absently rubbed the spot with a paw, watching her gather some acorns into a pile before taking a seat, tail wagging, expression friendly. At least, what Kroni assumed was friendly. Based on their previous interactions she felt safe in thinking so, and without preamble came closer and took her own seat right in front of the blueberry, paw going up to tap lightly on the other girls throat. It served two purposes - a supposedly 'friendly' gesture, as Fini was so fond of making, and a subtle check to see if perhaps there was hidden damage keeping her from speaking. It didn't really matter either way, but Kroni let the moment of curiosity flow before getting back to business.

She had come up with a few signs beforehand, contemplating general symbols for various things that could be spelled out. Kroni stood and did a quick trot of the perimeter of Fini's den before coming back to Fini. She pinched her toes together and placed them on her cheek briefly before placing them once again higher up by her ear. "Home," she murmured. If Fini seemed confused, Kroni would gesture around them and tap Fini's chest before repeating the gesture she'd made before. "Home," she said again. "Your home."

Kroni was a patient girl, and perhaps could be called a kind teacher. She spoke to Fini as Kroni found that she wished she had been taught - calmly, quietly, with the understanding that perhaps she couldn't understand. She tried to apply that here, knowing that there would always be misunderstandings in Saboro and not being able to speak would likely only worsen them and test others patience. It wasn't her job to watch out for Fini - she had a hard enough time looking out for herself.

But despite knowing that, Kroni didn't think she would be okay with the knowledge she could have helped and Fini suffered for the lack of it.

She really... just liked acorns. There was no other way to describe it. She glanced back idly at the little pile, was it shameful to collect acorns? No, she wasn't a squirrel, but?? Something that made her a little anxious, and she shuffled herself in such a way that the pile was hidden out of sight. It wasn't something she was going to be judged for, whatever the case.

Turning her head back to her guest, she had found Kroni sitting directly in front of her, Fini's own fur fluffy up and she'd tense just a bit. Uhm!?! Fini was never the type to be really bothered about personal space, and minding ones own..well space, she wasn't exactly bothered in a bad way either. Surprised, a good surprise. She tried to give the other a weak albeit awkward smile, glancing around and to the ground a couple of times, unsure if eye contact was something she was allowed to give the other. Internally she screamed 'WHY ARE YOU BEING SO AWKWARD!!!??' and she felt herself snort a bit of silent laughter. Goodness, get a grip Finita.

The tap was another thing that took her by surprise, a shiver wracking her body only slightly and the blue female could feel herself holding in the slightest of breaths. It felt as if she had no fur what so ever, her body tingling with antsy little pin prickles. Strange, but she looked alertly to Kroni, had her friend just now figured out that she was mute? She tilted her head curiously as Kroni signed and mouthed the words to her. Home?

Blue eyes glancing about the den and back to Kroni, my home? She nodded, though her brows were furrowed, was this? What was this? Instead of signing back however, like her friend probably wanted, Fini happily patted the floor of the den with a paw. A gesture as in to say, 'yes yep mhm! this sure is my home!'. It was quite comical really, she truly was an oblivious girl. It was really such a shame, to here of all places. In the past, people had died for less. Fini had just been lucky enough to slip through the cracks, to be found by nicer, sweeter wolves. There was sure to still be monsters who lurked in this jungle.

She'd raise her paw this time and tap gently on Kroni's chest, mirroring how the other had done. Was that what she had wanted? Pulling her paw away and still slightly looking at the other with uncertainty. She looked so lost, but also apologetic at the same time, a true talent.

For a split second, Kroni thought that Fini had understood. She had frowned, staring hard, before she grinned happily, patting at the floor excitedly. Gold eyes drifted from that tapping paw back to the sweet face, and immediately realized that no, she did not get it. Kroni’s expression did not change, except perhaps for a near invisible quirking of her lips.

Yes, it could be described as comical, but Kroni, if she really knew and understood what it meant, would have found it utterly adorable. But she didn’t really know what it was, what it meant. She did know, however, that she liked it. She liked Fini, and being around Fini, and the quirky little things she did that made her so different. It was what made her want to help her, perhaps.

But just like that, Fini suddenly looked so forlorn, her paw coming to rest up against Kroni’s chest. She looked down at the black paw lingering there in the pale fur, blinking slowly, not really understanding the gesture. And when she looked back to Finns’ face she seemed so… unhappy.

Kroni didn’t like seeing that expression on her face. Not one bit.

Before Fini could pull away Kroni placed her own paw atop the one against her. It was warm against her scarred pads, the fur soft. She managed something resembling a smile, one that perhaps could be called sweet, and said easily, “It’s okay.” If Fini looked as if she didn’t believe her, Kroni would say it again. She’d hold the paw a little longer than necessary before releasing it.

The slab repeated the gesture she’d made earlier, pinching her toes together and placing them on her cheek, and then higher up by her ear. “Home. That’s what it means.” She’d motion for Fini, hoping that she would mimic her.

Really, though, she hoped that Fini would understand her intentions without her having to say them out loud.

That she just wanted Fini to stay safe.

Kroni was a curious thing, a grey area in what she had come to see in Saboro's people. Her emotions were so secluded and not so open, she'd seen curious minds and smiling faces, but with Kroni; the female had held the same nondescript look since their first meeting. He had always been a struggle to read, and it always made Fini feel as if she kept messing up. Just once, a smile would help alleviate the feeling, but she wasn't sure if Kroni was able to do such. What had made her like this? Perhaps she had always been like this?

She froze, snapping back into reality with a jerk blinking wide-eyed at Kroni as the other placed her paw upon her own. The blue female tilted her head curiously, a hint of sadness in her eyes, they really didn't know each other. They worlds apart and grasping at straws, but still they attempted to understand the other. No one ever said that it was going to be an easy feat. Who hurt her, if only she could ask. If she could add some relief to the other, she'd do it in a heartbeat.

The smile, it's all she could really call it? The turn of her lips and the upward motion, it ghosted on her face for a moment and Fini looked on in amazed wonder. It's okay. Her ears heard the words and her brows furrowed for a moment, knitting together. Was it really okay? But the blue female smiled back sheepishly, nodding her head with subtle hesitance. Kroni, allowing her paw to drop and Fini stared at her toes for a moment too long.

She meant the gesture, her head tilting as she rose her paw up again, mimicking and fumbling a bit as she did so, but home was signed. Fini was pretty clever when it came to picking things up, her mind was a sponge and she absorbed knowledge. It was a kind thing she could tell that Kroni was attempting to do, no one had yet even matched such a kindness before. 'Thank you', the blue female mouthed silently, a smile brightly shown on her face as she clapped her paws together in excitement.
