White Winds [province 1 claim]

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

There had been no time to find true shelter before the storm hit. Sabal clawed his way into a deep crag in the boulders - not even a true cave, his back and shoulders were open to the falling snow if not all of the wind.

Storms this bad were not supposed to come while the midnight sun was still shining. They were supposed to come in the winter when everyone had already found shelters to store their caches. It was supposed to be the most dangerous on the pack ice where miles of flat land made it impossible to find shelter - not in the forests that should have been shelter enough from howling winds and snow so fast it wore away stone.

The cat kept his eyes stayed squeezed closed, his tail pressed close over his nose and mouth. Even pressed against the rocks snow had settled and refrozen into Sabal's fur, little needles of ice prickling into his undercoat and the skin beneath.

But summer blizzards were not unheard of. Something they should have known would happen, something they should have had a plan for...the cubs, they would have had no idea what to do. If they had stayed out in the open when the clouds rolled over...Sabal had seen his share of little frozen bodies buried in the snow before, Grimsthorpe was supposed to be the end of that. That was why the parents had abandoned their young to start with.

This would not be the end of their pride, even if the cubs were gone. Maybe Grimsthorpe was scattered for now, but once the winds died down...there had to be others that had found shelter. Raf was smart enough to have recognised the clouds, surely. The ones that had been hunting - the bear dog and his master - they had lived in the North long enough to have hiding places scattered throughout the tundra. Maybe the little ones had huddled up in their little cave and had not felt the need to investigate anything this morning.

Raf was the realist. For now, Sabal could be the hope needed to find someone still alive when the ice settled.
