It seemed there were others who were interested in land she wished to claim.

Sora looked about the marshland area, ears pricking forward as she stood in the muggy place. She knew she wanted to start a new life here, make something of herself. Not that she had any doubts in herself, but she wanted to be able to make her family proud. Keep the honor that their family had always maintained. Her father did always make sure that she did everything with good intentions in mind. And she wasn't about to stray from that. However, that wasn't going to stop her from fighting for what she wanted, no matter who the opponent was.

And she wanted this land. It wasn't the most optimal land to perhaps establish oneself (there was plenty of cleansing to be done, it would seem), but you had to start somewhere. Sora shook her coat, giving a sigh as she flicked her tail and looked. It seemed her opponent would be coming from that direction, and she wondered who it would be. Green eyes held an intent stare not necessarily meant to intimidate, but to make sure that they understood that she was being serious. She wasn't some pushover who rolled belly-up at the first sign of conflict. She had never done that, and she wasn't going to start now.

Hopefully she could hold that determination throughout the whole ordeal.

Bowing into a stretch, she loosened muscles that were tensing up from being antsy. She was eager to get started, and when her opponent would appear, Sora would look over and a flicker of surprise would flit across her expression. A saber?? Boy, she hadn't expected that one. But she had to keep calm, and so gave a deep breath and stepped forward. "It would seem we have mutual interests," she would begin, looking at the feline straight in the eye. All in all, this female had guts. "But I'm sure you can tell that I am just as unwilling to budge as you are. Otherwise, you wouldn't be here." Why else have this fight anyway? "Either way," Sora would continue, bowing her head just enough to show respect for the other. "I wish you a pleasant battle, and may the best contestant win." And with muscles tensing up...

She would pray to Amaterasu and wait.

Veritas was to meet her opponent on the land they both sought to claim.

Valkyri had told her to practice restraint in their battle--they meant to conquer, not kill. The she-cat could agree there, and didn't object to such a request. She did not take joy in taking lives.

As Veritas approached the site on which they would battle, her paws occasionally sank into particularly muddle spots, and with a wrinkled muzzle she pondered why canines would fight for land like this. It was a dank, wet place, and for a creature who was at home in an open savannah, a wooded bog was hardly a pleasurable abode.

Still, it wasn't really the location she was Haven's champion for. It was the chance to make the land a place of sanctuary from the evils of the world. For slaves to find freedom. For the abused to find peace.

Turquoise eyes could easily spot the unusual red coat among the trees. The figure seemed to be stretching, loosening their muscles in preparation for their duel. Veritas could see the canine's green eyes widen a little before a veneer of calm replaced the surprise. "It would seem we have mutual interests," said the canine, "But I'm sure you can tell that I am just as unwilling to budge as you are. Otherwise, you wouldn't be here." Veritas smirked a little. This girl didn't seem half bad. It was a shame they were on opposite sides. "Either way, I wish you a pleasant battle, and may the best contestant win." the wolf dipped her head in a show of respect, and Veritas mirrored the gesture, adding "Same to you." The wolf tensed, and Veritas did the same. So their battle would begin.

The saber would begin to circle, keeping her right side to the wolf and keeping alert for any sudden movements the wolf might make. Once her circle came to about 180 degrees, her hind claws would kick into the dirt and she would leap, forelegs extended, claws out, towards the wolf. She aimed to strike the wolf in the side or shoulder, using her weight to bowl the canine over and pin her like she would a deer. Her claws may dig in as a result, but she would not rake them over her flesh if she could avoid it. A snarl boomed from her open jaws; she would see just how well this wolf could do in the face of a challenge like her.

((hopefully i can keep the actions clear enough! it should be easy since these two are different species, but if you need any clarification please let me know!!))

((I shall try to keep my actions clear as well~ if anything feel free to ask!))

The saber came into the clearing with certainty in her steps; that much the potential Hakkin could see. Sora watched carefully, green eyes looking the feline over. This opponent was well over her size, and certainly well over her own weight. But that couldn't stop the maroon female from defending her desires and dreams. She had just as much right to fight for this as this cat did. And while she was not taught to fear or hate these felines, she wasn't about to be rolling over for this one. So she would fight, just as much it seemed that this feline was set to, as well.

There was an air of respect coming from the saber, and it made Sora smile slightly. All the focus of her opponent was on her, and that was just how she wanted it. All she wanted from this was a good fight (and of course, the opportunity to win this land, if the Gods were in her favor), and she had a feeling that was just what she would be getting. She was perhaps sharing this feline's opinion that things might have been different if they didn't share the same desires.

"Same to you." A simple phrase, but one that the maroon female felt gratitude for. Not many in this world nowadays fought with honor or respect, and she was receiving both from the feline's end. Yes, perhaps no matter how this turned out, something good could come of this. That was what she believed in all situations, after all.

So it was with that note that the saber began to circle the wolf, and Sora walked in pace with the feline, making a smaller circle within the cat's larger one. Paws tread carefully, noting the much drier dirt on the land in which they stood, grateful for this little island and hoping there wasn't any mud nearby to slow her down. But that also applied to the saber. She'd just have to be careful. Green eyes watched seriously as she tried to remember what her father taught her. Keep your eyes on your opponent. Always know where they are. Small things that could essentially turn the tides of battle. And then dirt flew and the mighty saber was in the air, reaching for her with deadly claws.

Sora sprang into action, aiming to curb her body around those reaching paws and turning her body to be able to aim her own jaws at the saber's right shoulder or side. Much like the target the saber had chosen, the wolf was going for skin she could grab and pull. Without having the advantage of weight, she'd have to rely on speed and skills for this. If the saber dodged her, Sora would continue her quick steps to go for the saber's hindquarters and aim teeth for the flank. Eyes flitted between her target and the saber's head, knowing those teeth were just as deadly (if not more so) than her own. And hoping against hope this was the right move.

The wolf was much smaller, so Veritas should have expected she would be quicker on her feet. The saber's leap was easily dodged by the canine. Veritas would point her shoulders at the canine mid-jump, causing a lag between the time her fore-paws and hind-paws would land. The canine took that opportunity and grabbed her shoulder, teeth pinching fur and loose skin. The saber let loose another snarl, and as soon as all four paws were grounded she'd attempt a different tactic.

She'd kick off with her hind-legs once again, bringing both paws up to grab the canine in a sort of hug, attempting to pin her again in this movement. She threw her weight forward like a sumo-wrestler, claws extended so she could get a good grip on her back and/or shoulders. She would also throw her head forward so that, if the move landed, she could be neck-and-neck with the canine and remove the threat of an exposed throat. she would press the front of her sabers against her hackles, but make no move to bite.

So far, her mind was completely focused on this duel, but she was already recalling her own past experience with battling, which had been her and her brother against the male who usurped their father and killed their siblings. That had been a long and bloody ordeal, and he did not go down easily. Her poor brother had been injured badly in that fight, and that overwhelming scent of blood still stuck in her mind to this day. Though no blood had been drawn yet, she could almost smell it now, taste it in her mouth. A dark sinking feeling fell in her heart. This battle would be nothing like that struggle for revenge she'd had. This would be fought with honor and respect, and while to the winner went the spoilers, Veritas would hold no ill will for the female regardless of what would occur today.

Who knew, perhaps maybe one day they could be allies to the same goal?

Her bite was a success, and teeth clamped onto the loose skin on the saber's shoulder. Sora mentally smirked at this and she grounded her four paws on the dirt, making sure to have good footing so as to not lose her balance. The snarl from the feline shook her body to her core, but she didn't flinch or let go. It was going to take more than that to get her to loosen her grip. All she wanted was to be able to stay out of range of those claws and teeth. Particularly the teeth, if she were to be honest.

But who could have prepared her for the next move this feline would throw at her? Sora had not fought a sabertooth before, so she could only gander at what made sense to her as to what to do in battle. If she had met her half-sister, Moons may have been able to give a few pointers, but that was not the case. Neither knew of the other's existence, and so that left Sora to her own devices, watching out of her peripheral (for most of her vision was now focused on the saber's shoulder and side from her biting angle) as those flexible feline legs maneuvered around her and wrapped around her shoulders. Out of surprise Sora let go of her hold, but not before the cat's neck pressed against her own and she felt claws grip her shoulder blades and back.

Panic itched at her belly, curling in there as Sora struggled to hold a clear mind. While she had had her fair share of sparring to practice, none of those could have prepared her for what she faced now. Her mind was traveling a mile a minute as she tried to find a way to get out of this feline's (to her, deadly) grip. Her front paws came up and attempted to scratch at whatever of the feline she could reach with her blunt claws. While these were more used to dig, she knew it had to have some effect on feline skin. Strong huffs of breath escaped her as Sora tried to squeeze backwards out of the grip, to see if she could get out. As the saber threw her weight forward, Sora found her body twisting as it tried to keep a fair balance on the ground.

Instead, her back paws swept out from under her and Sora went down, landing on her side and almost immediately she'd roll on her back if possible in order to kick up at the saber, who undoubtedly would be hovering over her. As soon as her head was free of that neck press, Sora would aim to bite at the saber wherever she could land her teeth on. It was meant to make the saber back off so she could get on her paws again and stand. As her father had told her once, you had a high disadvantage if you were on your back in a fight.

((I hope this makes sense; this should be fun for Sora to try to get out of, haha.))

Veritas' grip worked, and she could feel the wolf beginning to panic. Tiny paws started scratching at her chest and torso, which were too blunt to break skin but did sting. They merely served as an annoyance at she leaned forward, knocking the wolf off of her feet. So there she stood, one paw on either side of the upturned wolf.

Her opponent began snapping her teeth, and the closest thing to the canine's muzzle was her paws. Veritas would hop away from those dangerous little needle teeth, sacrificing the wolf potentially getting back on her feet for the sake of keeping her paws intact.

While she had the wolf close to her, she would swing her right arm powerfully, aiming to strike at her rib cage, back or hindquarters to rattle her and maybe do just enough damage to keep her on the ground for just a little longer. She did not use her claws--the force of the hit would do enough, she didn't need to draw blood if she could avoid it. If she missed, the wolf got up or both, she would jump back, attempting to keep her distance, bringing them both back to square one.

So far, despite the wolf's size, she was proving to be formidable. Veritas didn't want to fight dirty, but once the wolf would start to do damage, so would she. For certain, she wouldn't use her teeth; they would do serious damage, and were meant for strangulation. Her claws would do well enough if things got serious.

((a bit short--lemme know if i need to add some!))

She could feel that the scratches were hitting; skin was making contact with her blunt claws, and it made her paws move faster if possible in order to do more damage. Not that it was doing much, if Sora had taken the time to notice, because soon she was on her back with the feline hovering over her like an adult wolf dominating a pup to show them who was boss. And right now, she knew, that boss was this cat. Sora could not let that happen. Allowing this feline to dominate over her meant that she lost, not only the land which she fought for, but her own honor as well.

Or at least, that was how she viewed it.

That was when she began to snap her teeth, aiming for anything in her view as she twisted her body this way and that in order to strike home. While none of her bites actually made it through, Sora noticed the paws were dancing away from her. Now was her chance! Eyes narrowed and she sent a swift prayer to Amaterasu as she whirled onto her belly to place her paws under her to push up and away from her opponent. It was perhaps the fastest she had ever moved in order to get back on her feet. But... she wasn't quite fast enough.

Something hard struck her hindquarters just as she put speed forward, throwing off her balance as her back legs swung over and broke the symmetry of her body. A startled yelp escaped her maw (which embarrassed her), and she skidded onto her side again as pain jolted across her side. However, she gritted her teeth and let the wave pass over her and in that same sliding motion Sora would scramble to her paws, perhaps less gracefully than a Hakkin should.

Such was battle.

Green eyes seemed to glow fiercely as she panted, looking at the saber just as the feline jumped back, bringing them back to the beginning of their fight. Though there were some differences, with the female wolf panting to catch her breath and still feeling the soreness of the hit to her flank. She realized now, as her brain caught up with the moment, that it had been the feline's swift paw that had struck her. It was the only thing that made sense. A small smile actually appeared on Sora's maw, perhaps surprising the saber. But honestly, she was impressed, and it made her appreciate the moment despite the possible losses. "You are quite the fighter," she said, speaking for the first time since they started.

This time Sora was the one that would move first, gathering her strength and launching herself forward towards the saber. This time though, she feinted and moved to the left, attempting to run around the feline (hopefully faster than the cat could) in order to reach the flank. One delicate part of any animal was the tail. And that was the target Sora had this time. If possible, she would open her jaws to grab onto the tail and secure a hold on there. Only with the saber's reactions would she be able to plan from there.

That right hook she threw made contact with the canine, and with a loud yelp the canine landed quite hard, skidding to a stop away from the saber. She got to her paws however--this girl could certainly take a hit. The saber and the wolf faced each other, each with a great fire in their eyes. The wolf was panting, and Veritas had her jaws slightly parted, not particularly sucking in air with her tongue like this one was but still letting her breaths cool her tongue and throat. Not panting, but close.

They sized each other up, Veritas waiting for the female to make her move. The canine smiled, as if she found the match exhilarating, and puffed "You are quite the fighter.". Veritas's expression didn't change for a moment before she offed her own small smile, then a nod. Same went for the little wolf; for as small and light she was, she certainly knew how to take advantage of her differences and use them against the cat.

Suddenly, the red-pelted girl dashed forward, and Veritas prepared to swing at her again with another right hook--but, instead of swatting her off her feet like she's hoped, the wolf dodged left. Too slow--as Veritas was whirling to counter-attack, teeth clamped shut around her bobbed tail.

A ferocious, explosive snarl ripped from her throat as she bucked like a bronco, kicking out with her hind legs to try to toss her into the air or possibly hit her someplace that would cause enough pain for her to let go (with little to no risk of hurting her with her claws). If she held on, she would swing her hindquarters around, in the fashion of a bull, and try again. But if she let go, Veritas would whirl around to face her. The levelheadedness she kept before was gone; the wolf went for her tail, and the saber was pissed such a respectable wolf would pull such a cheap trick as tail-biting. A warrior faced their opponent!

Any restraint or reservations she had before were gone now. It was go-time.

Ghostly silvers of fur and dabbled whites of teeth lurk just out of peripheral. The ever-present lead shifting like a great jungle cat through the growth -- watching comrade fight for land they would all lay claim. She knows somewhere the mammoth waits impatiently, chitting his tusk. And she knows that Veritas holds a pin drop of skepticism in vision. Or perhaps, the prophet who envisions it.

Their goal had been to win, not to kill. To subdue, frighten, knock unconscious even. Victory, if they all built this pack on pacifist belief and goal, would have to be shed without blood. But there is a certain point in a battle where things shift. Become visibly dangerous. And she has been carefully watching until this point. With her knowing eyes, her secretive whispers. Brushing against leaf and foliage in a sudden appearance. Soft and quiet compared to the slashing violence on display not out of earshot.

"Veritas." she says, loud and suddenly. "Your claws,"But yet -- that did not have to involve death. Pain, fear, retreat it seemed, might be the only option. "use them." and the lesser of two evils.

And she waits. Rather command is followed or not. Sitting on haunches respectively, eyes aglow. There had been a reason this cat was chosen to fight, to martyr.

Then light shone from Logafell,
and from that radiance there came bolts of lightning;
wearing helmets at Himingvani [came the valkyries].
Their byrnies were drenched in blood;
and rays shone from their spears.

There was a flicker of a connection when saber and wolf smiled at each other, both appreciating the fight they were having. Though it wasn't long regardless when Sora made her move. Out of her peripheral she noticed a paw lift and go for the swipe, but she knew she was heading in a different direction. And while she was well aware going for the tail wasn't the most appropriate move (not for two respectable warriors, anyway), Sora had never fought a saber before. She was running out of options as to what to do to keep her ground here.

The snarl exploded in her ears, making them flicker back as her own teeth clamped down on the furry limb. She wasn't meaning to harm the limb -- this wasn't a vicious battle -- so there would be no pulling as a result. But when the hind legs kicked out to counter her move, Sora was hit along the shoulder towards her ribcage. Her maw opened out of instinct and let go of the tail, gritting her teeth in pain as she stumbled backwards to create space between the two. And just what had that gained?

A pissed off saber. Good job.

Sora watched the female, a flicker of emotion heading towards apology before it was gone behind her stoic mask as she tried to figure out what to do in this situation. She began to circle around the sabertooth, when another voice entered the fray. Veritas? Sora flinched and looked away from her opponent, glancing past the saber and looking for the voice. "Your claws, use them." Lips lifted in a growl, ears flickering back as Sora glanced about a few times, changing between the saber -- now known as Veritas -- and this entity now present in the area.

"Who are you to interfere?!" she called out to the intruder (at least in her mind). This was their fight, and that was how it was meant to be. If you were here to spectate, you kept your mouth shut. A growl rumbled in her throat as she looked at the saber now (assuming no attack had happened) with anger simmering beneath her steady gaze. It was almost like she was demanding an explanation, but if not, their battle would continue. But Sora was not going to be caught off guard...

Teeth let go of her poor little tail, and in one fluid motion Veritas spun around to face the wolf, her hackles puffed out and her ears flat against her skull. "Cheap," she hissed. Either this wolf was not as honorable as she seemed or she was getting desperate. She assumed the latter, after catching that worried flash in her eyes. Veritas was mad, but maybe later after thinking on it she could forgive her current opponant.

When a familiar voice came from the foliage nearby she too risked a glance, spotting that pitch black figure veiled behind the greenery. While the red wolf asked who this figure was, Veritas did not care to explain. Instead, she rumbled out a curt "Be quiet." before turning her gaze back down upon the canine. She would speak to Valkyri later about her interruption. Maybe now it was clear that Veritas and the figure in the woods were associated with one another, or perhaps her rude response would make them seem more like strangers. The saber wasn't here to show off her allies, she was here to champion for them and she didn't need them breathing down her neck.

The saber wasted no time in rushing after the wolf once again, mouth wide in another loud ear-jarring roar. She would rear up a little on her hind legs in an attempt to throw a right hook followed by a left, this time with claws extended. These could be dodged if the wolf was agile and could quickly duck, and left her chest exposed; but at the same time, if the canine was hit, it would not only bowl her over if she didn't brace herself but also leave her with some deep scars for her to take home to her little wolf friends.

The black wolf could kid herself all she liked that her influence would be the cause of the shift in Veritas' tactics, but the saber did not care. Her job was to be a leader, not a fighting coach.

((Going to guess I can post without waiting on Plague?))

The saber tooth looked just as pissed as Sora was soon to feel, whirling about at her with her hackles raised. "Cheap," came the hiss from the feline, making the maroon female's eyes glint in apology (and was that.. shame?) before looking away and continuing the battle. She would make sure to purify herself later of such treacherous actions. But could she be blamed for reacting in such a way when she had such a novel opponent?

Perhaps that would depend on the saber.

"Be quiet." It was a similar train of thought that the wolf had, and it made her glance at Veritas -- now knowing her name -- in curiosity. Maybe they didn't know each other? It wasn't like Sora was about to sit down and ask. There was no time for that. And it was only highlighted when the saber tooth bore down on her again, roaring once more. Ears flattening, Sora dashed backwards in an evasive maneuver. It would essentially save her life, but not leave her without marks as claws raked across her side in a pain-stabbing slash. Hurt erupted from her instantly, though they were much more shallow than would have been if she not had jumped back at the snarl emitted from Veritas.

Anger also blossomed in her chest, both from the would-be intruder and the injuries now sustained from the claws. A snarl erupted from her maw as Sora looked at the saber tooth now, not daring to leap close to the claws she was now willing to use. The battle had just escalated immensely, and the stakes rose up in that moment. Green eyes glowed angrily as she bared her fangs at the saber. Her calm demeanor had changed in the instant that the other wolf had walked in on their fight. But what wasn't helping was the blood now trickling from the claw marks across her left ribcage and shoulder.

It was beginning to cloud her mind, not leaving room for thinking through what her next move would be. Already the pain was dulling as the adrenaline seeped through her body and numbed the assaulted area, and Sora was already moving forward as she let out a growl rumbling through her throat. Her paws picked up speed as she put in a burst of energy and dashed in a slight arc almost right towards Veritas' left front leg. But at the last moment she ducked her body and twisted it and aimed her jaws wide at the soft spot right in the armpit of the saber. Where leg met ribs was where her bite was aiming, and if it hit, it was going to clamp down with gusto. Her time of being nice was through.

Now, the party was getting started.

Re: Veritas VS. Sora

When the wolf recoiled from the saber's terrible voice, Veritas almost thought her attack would miss. But her reach proved to be of use; claws raked along her side, and when the two were out of reach from each other once more Veritas almost couldn't tell the blood apart from the pelt. She could certainly smell it in the air now, and catching the wolf's side beginning to take a darker hue confirmed her attack's hit. A vicious snarl came from the wolf, and the saber was almost surprised she was capable of suck anger. Her eyes seemed to reflect an inner fire; Veritas too bared her fangs, knowing things were going to get a lot more interesting.

The wolf charged, a growl bubbling in her throat like a geyser ready to blow. Veritas would try to attempt the same "hug" as she'd tried last time, wrapping her paws over the wolf's shoulders. Unfortunately, this maneuver would prove to be the last thing she'd want.

Needle-like teeth grabbed the sensitive skin between her chest and arm and Veritas yowled as they sank into her flesh. She took a step back with a hindleg and set her right foreleg on the ground, left foreleg still clinging to the wolf's back with her claws extended. She did not jerk back however; she knew that would only create a worse situation than she was already in. Veritas would have to think of a better strategy, because for now they were was no way they could separate themselves. If the wolf tried pulling back, she would risk serious damage from the saber's claws, but that would also mean Veritas would be missing a chunk of her armpit. If she let go now, Veritas would not be so forgiving, letting her claws rake into the canine's back if she would pull away.

If she still held on, Veritas would bring her other paw up around the wolf's shoulders again, leaning into the wolf to smother her. the canine would need to breathe soon; with the full weight of an adult saber bearing down on her, she would have no choice but to wriggle free. If she felt the wolf let go so would she with her claws, and let the wolf back out. All she wanted right now was those teeth out of her flesh. If the wolf held on, Veritas would simply lay on her until she had no more air.

((sorry, dinnertime--if i need to elaborate, let me know, i had to rush cause i smelled burgers!!))

The anger was simmering beneath her skin, making her body react in ways she wouldn't normally; Sora was actually a very logical wolf, but when it came to her emotions... there wasn't much of a hold on there. It was like going from zero to sixty the way her anger levels could just spike up the way they did now. She had hoped to learn some way to control this or level them out over time, but so far she had not found a solution, and the result was that now she was boiling close to the surface. In the end, it's what prompted the attack the way it did, and she wasn't going to stop now.

The difference would lie in what happened after this.

Veritas' yowl of pain brought a sense of morbid satisfaction from the angry Sora as her teeth sank successfully into her target. She would later likely regret the feeling, but in her unstable state she didn't care. She felt at least one foreleg on her back with the claws out (there would be no mercy this time from the saber, just like there wasn't now from the wolf), and it only irritated her more. This was out of the frustration that she was mentally running out of ideas to throw at this feline in order to surprise her. Maybe if she wasn't so angry she could think of more; but Sora would have to get out of that first before any of that started happening.

Then she felt the other paw wrap around her as well, and then a pressure was applied as suddenly her face was smothered into the feline's fur. Sora immediately let out a growl of discomfort, but it was hard to sound it out when fur was practically suffocating you through your mouth and nose. Her body tensed up and out of reflex her hold on Veritas' skin tightened, her teeth applying more pressure and (if it hadn't happened before already with the initial bite) likely drawing blood out of the injury. Her frustration was only increasing as her slowly oxygen-deprived mind was beginning to panic in finding a way out. Survival instincts in a wolf were prime, and this was quickly becoming one of those situations.

Her body started to instinctively pull back, wanting out of that situation as fast as possible. Meaningless thoughts whirled through the female's mind as she was struggling for air beneath all of that pressure into her face. Finally her teeth let go out of making wanting to breath a higher priority than anything else. But that struggle hadn't helped her angry mindset as she stepped back and immediately took a deep breath, shaking her head and body as it started to come back to life, or at least that's how it felt. As her body began to fuel itself once more with the necessary air, Sora was still mentally recovering as she once again reacted impulsively out of the anger that was now added because of the smothering attempt. Now her jaws opened and reached to attempt to latch onto one of the saber's forelegs, which were likely still nearby in that process of letting go of Sora. The whole interaction only took seconds really, but it was slow enough in her mind to feel like forever before she even tried to latch onto one of Veritas' legs, and the wrist joint near the paw pads. What happened next was fully up to the saber.
